AT&T Is Becoming the Spectrum of Phones

This week, some iPhone 18 Pro Maxes on AT&T started dying. No calls, no texts, no data. Apple says it's a hardware issue on their end, and a software update can't save a phone that's already been hit. You need a whole new one.

Not AT&T's fault. But when I saw the headline, my first thought was: yeah, that tracks.

Because AT&T is on a generational run of being a horrible company. And the same week this broke, their CEO went on record talking down Elon and Starlink, and calling AT&T "the disruptor."

Let me tell you what being an AT&T customer actually looks like right now.

My AT&T Story

I've been with AT&T for ten years. Never had a real problem. My bill sat between $265 and $272 every month, December through April. Boring. Fine.

Then we moved.

AT&T told me the new area qualified me for discounts. I'd save $50 a month, and they'd throw in an iPad. Easy yes.

Here's what actually happened:

  • First bill after the call: a $30 processing fee.
  • June: $374. Up $109, not down $50. I called. They admitted they'd added things to my plan I never agreed to. "Resolved."
  • July: $710. I called again. "Our bad. The iPad's sorted, you won't pay for it."
  • Next bill: up again. The reason? The last rep broke the original promo. So the iPad they promised for $1.99 a month was now $25 a month, with a cellular plan nobody ever mentioned.

Every single time, the same script. "Oh, our bad. We fixed it." Then the next bill shows up and it's broken in a new way.

All in, that's 16 hours of my life over three months fixing problems they created.

And my bill today? $275.77. After all that, I'm paying about ten dollars more than before they "saved" me money. They promised fifty less.

The best part: their own reps were cracking jokes to me about how bad their customer service is. More than once. The people who work there know.

At one point I just said, whatever, charge me. I'm done. They wore me down. That's the business model.

Meanwhile, in the Tower

Right as all this is going on, AT&T CEO John Stankey sat down with Axios and called SpaceX's phone plans not viable. He said "nothing beats" fiber, and that satellite, "if everything happens right over the next 10 years," is "still not going to beat fiber."

Then he said this: "I think we're the disruptor."

Days later, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon announced a joint venture to fix dead zones with satellite. The thing that supposedly isn't viable.

Fiber is great. Most of the country can't get it. That's the whole point.

My guy. You can't even disrupt your own billing department.

AT&T Is Becoming the Spectrum of Phones

Huge. Everywhere. And a punchline.

You've got the size, so you assume people will stay no matter what. And honestly, a lot of them do. Most people defending AT&T haven't touched their plan in a decade. They've never had to call customer service. It's habit, not quality.

I was that guy too. Right up until I needed them.

And the second I started talking about this online, the floodgates opened. Everybody has a story. It's not just me. It's everybody.

It's Not Just AT&T

The giants keep running the same play. Mock the new guy, coast on size, and assume the customer has nowhere else to go.

Samsung. Hours before Apple launched its first foldable, Samsung dropped a "Welcome to Foldables" ad calling the Z Fold 8 "the world's lightest fold." A company that makes screens for iPhones, trolling one of its biggest customers.

Twitch. For years, Twitch partners couldn't multistream anywhere except phone apps like TikTok and Instagram. Twitch didn't see them as real competition. In Q2 2026, TikTok Live did 8.9 billion hours watched. Twitch did 4.5 billion. Almost double, on a feed built for seconds.

Twitch talks like it's still the streaming platform. AT&T talks like it's still the disruptor. Neither one is looking at what's happening on the ground.

The Verdict

The companies that win are the ones that actually serve people. The customer, the creator, the gamer. Every time.

Over the next five years, the giants either get better or they stop existing.

Say what you want about Elon. I'm not betting against the guy who lands rockets over the company that can't land my correct bill.

What's your worst carrier story? I want to hear it.
